Selling your blog!
I was making this entry on the Sales Coach page maintained on Facebook and then realized there is enough stuff to present in the form of an article.
So, with my limited blogging experience and the little I know about promotion of blogs, here are a few tips to help you increase readership and visits to your blog:
The number of visitors to your blog depends on a few critical factors:
1. Nature of content.
This is the obvious one. You may get a few courtesy visits and friendly advice from friends when you start writing and some of them may stay on to support as you present more articles but to get genuine interest from your readers the material you present has to be interesting or useful to the audience.
Stick to topics you know well or can write about with some degree of competence.
2. Frequency – how often you post new articles.
Although it isn’t essential and probably not possible to write an article everyday the greater the level of activity the higher the number of visits.
Writing regularly helps you improve own skills and keeps people constantly connected with your blog.
3. Repeat visits – Quality is a big factor.
As you post more and more readers start subscribing to your page your repeat visit numbers increase and the chance of your blog getting found increases too.
Let me mention here that frequency should not be at the expense of quality.
4. Number of blogs you visit and leave your link.
In the early days it is critical that you visit other blogs that present similar content and leave a comment after reading the articles there. The blogger then makes a return visit to your page to read your material – this helps both parties involved.
And it increases your chances of getting found by others because your link becomes a permanent record at the site visited.
The comments you leave at the visited blog should also be worded well so that people get motivated to visit your page
5. Major keywords used in each article.
This is a tough one, but helps your blog take a big leap in readership. People search for articles using keywords. You need to find the popular keywords related to your subject and use them as seamlessly as possible in the articles – Caution: Don’t get too excited, overuse will be counterproductive.
6. Join Blogger Groups
There are number of groups available on the Internet where bloggers get together and post articles – such sites:
- provide a ready audience for their articles
- access to articles presented by other bloggers,
- opportunity to learn from people who have been at it for much longer
- opportunity to network with fellow – bloggers
indiblogger.in and blogadda.com are two popular Indian bloggers sites.
7. Presence on Social Media
How could I miss this one, specially because I have a page on Facebook? I think this is my most corrected article because it has undergone over a dozen corrections after I posted it.
Yes, it is extremely useful to have your own page on Facebook – it extends your reach beyond the list of friends. Subscribers of Facebook who are not on your Friends List can subscribe to your page and get notified on all the updates you post there.
You can do the same on Google Plus and LinkedIn.
The Sales Coach blog used to get a 1000 visitors every 7-8 days when I wrote an article a day, but now its gone down to once in 10-11 days because new articles are published less often.
These days I am not promoting the blog like I used to, say 2 months back; till I reach a critical mass and readership goes viral I need to keep my activity on the net at an optimal level or else readership would be adversely impacted.
And maybe I am not promoting my blog at the right places on the web. There is always room for improvement and you keep learning more tricks as you stay engaged and connected with the blogging community.
Success depends on how serious you are in promoting your baby.
Well, as in every sphere there are some special people who keep generating high quality stuff that others are eagerly waiting for and there some really lucky ones who are present at the right place at the right time. For the rest of us success is assured by the amount of effort that goes into the activity.
